From October 31 to November 3, the 12th International Conference on Advanced Fibers and Polymer Materials (ICAFPM 2025) was held in Shanghai under the theme "Better Fibers, Better World." The opening ceremony was attended by nearly 3,000 experts from 21 countries and regions, including Liu Chenggong, Secretary of the Party Committee of Donghua University; Wang Jing, District Governor of Songjiang; Zhai Jinguo, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission; Chen Xin, Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology; Xie Xin, Vice President and Secretary-General of the China Association of Women Scientists and Technologists; Li Juan, Vice President of the China Textile Engineering Society; Zhang Qinghua, Vice President of Donghua University; and Bai Chunli, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The conference was chaired by Academician Zhu Meifang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of the State Key Laboratory for Advanced Fiber Materials at Donghua University.

Liu Chenggong delivered an opening speech in which he emphasized that Donghua University has been continuously improving its scientific and technological innovation system and deepening international academic exchanges and cooperation. He expressed the hope that this conference would further pool the wisdom and strength of academia and industry, promote cooperation in scientific and technological innovation and talent development, and jointly open a new chapter in the advancement of fiber science.

The conference announced the winners of the fifth ‘Qian Baojun Fiber Materials Award.’ Jiang Shicheng, Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Donghua University, received the ‘Qian Baojun Fiber Materials Distinguished Achievement Award,’ while Professor Pierre-Alexis Moutty of the University of Oxford and Professor Liu Zunfeng of Nankai University were respectively honored with the ‘Qian Baojun Fiber Materials Young Scholar Award.’ Professor Cheng Zhengdi, recipient of the fourth ‘Qian Baojun Fiber Materials Distinguished Achievement Award,’ delivered the Awardee Lecture. Additionally, the conference presented several annual honors, including the Advanced Fiber Materials Journal High-Impact Paper Award, Best Reviewer Award, and Best Outreach Award. Attendees, including experts and scholars, engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions on the development trends and research frontiers of advanced fiber and polymer materials.

During the conference, several parallel events were held, including the 2025 Annual International Advisory Committee Seminar and International Assessment Symposium on Materials Science Development and Construction for the State Key Laboratory for Advanced Fiber Materials and the College of Materials Science and Engineering of Donghua University, a preparatory meeting for the International Society of Advanced Fiber Materials, and the 2025 Advanced Fibers and Polymer Materials Exhibition.
The conference was jointly organized by the State Key Laboratory for Advanced Fiber Materials, the College of Materials Science and Engineering of Donghua University, the Polymer Division of the Chinese Chemical Society, and the Fiber Material Modification and Composite Technology Division of the Chinese Materials Research Society. It featured one main forum and 12 parallel sessions, with a total of 525 academic presentations focusing on topics such as ‘High-Performance Fibers and Products,’ ‘Biomedical and Environmentally Friendly Fiber Materials,’ ‘Smart Fibers and Wearable Technology,’ and ‘Fiber-Wisdom Forum: Women in Materials Innovation.’
