World Cities Day 2023 - “Urban Environment” Theme Forum and the “4th Shanghai International Forum on Urban Furniture” Held

One of the five thematic forums of the main event of World Cities Day,“Urban Environment” Theme Forum and the “4th Shanghai International Forum on Urban Furniture” was recently convened at the Yan’an Road Campus of Donghua University.

This forum, themed around “Enhancing Urban Environmental Quality and Building an Ecologically Resilient City”, brought together representatives from international organizations, government officials, experts, scholars, and enterprises and institutions. Guests gave keynote speeches and shared ideas on topics such as the construction of green communities and ecological urban development, innovative practices in urban renewal, high-quality construction and challenging governance in cities. They exchanged best practices and innovative approaches for the sustainable development of cities, aiming to collaboratively build a future urban environment that is healthier, safer, friendlier, and more inclusive. During the event, an expert think tank specializing in the refined construction of the urban environment in the Yangtze River Delta was announced to be established, and the launch ceremony and achievement release of the C40 Green & Thriving Neighborhood Global Case Library were also held.

Two roundtable forums focused on the themes of “Experiences and Models of Building Green & Thriving Neighborhood in Chinese Cities” and “Urban Furniture and Modernized Urban Environment in Chinese Style”, exploring Chinese urban construction and development pathways, and seeking consensus on locally adapted approaches for Chinese-style modernization.

According to the information available, the forum is jointly organized by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Office of the Leading Group for the Fine Urban Management in Shanghai, Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment, China Association for Standardization, and Donghua University. It is co-hosted by Donghua University Environmental Art Design Research Institute, in collaboration with China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp. Ltd., Shanghai International College of Fashion and Innovation of Donghua University, College of Fashion and Design of Donghua University, Shanghai Coordination Center of World Cities Day, Yangtze River Delta Urban Environment Refined Construction Research Center, and China Association for Standardization Urban Furniture Branch. As an essential component of the city, “urban furniture” encompasses items ranging from garbage bins to public toilets and bus stops, closely intertwined with the lives of citizens. The standardization and systematic implementation of urban furniture bring emotional warmth and human care to urban development. This approach represents a sustainable path toward enhancing the overall urban environment and improving the quality of people’s lives.
